Has your flight been delayed and now you’re not sure what to do? Did you know that, because of this delayed flight, you might have the right to claim up to 600€ in compensation?

The actual amount you can expect to receive can change due to different circumstances, but don’t worry. I will explain the different situations you might encounter and how much you can expect to receive for each one.

As a general rule, you should know that the airline has to provide you with food and drinks, access to a phone or email, as well as accommodation (if the flight is delayed overnight).

How long is the flight delay?

The first thing you need to do is find out how long the delay is, as this can mean that the airline has to provide you with different services. This can also change depending on the distance of the flight.

As a general rule, you should know that the airline has to provide you with food and drink, access to a phone or email, as well as accommodation (if the flight is delayed overnight).

However, you might only be entitled to these perks depending on how long the flight has been delayed. Here’s a quick guide:

– For a flight distance of less than 1,500km your flight has to have a 2 hour delay;
– For a flight distance of over 1,500km (and within the EU), your flight has to have a 3 hour delay;
– For a flight distance between 1,500km and 3,500km (and between EU and non-EU countries), your flight has to have a 3 hour delay;
– For a flight distance of more than 3,500km (and between EU and non-EU countries), your flight has to have a 4 hour delay.

If you are not offered help at the airport, it’s important that you keep all receipts for expenses, as you can claim compensation for those later.

However, keep in mind that the airline only pays for reasonable expenses (you are unlikely to get money back for alcohol, expensive meals or luxury hotels).

Is your flight delayed 3 hours or more?

You are entitled to flight compensation if the delay was not caused by extraordinary circumstances outside of the airline’s control.

If you’re on a flight outside the EU which connects to an EU flight, and you arrived to your final european destination more than 3 hours late, you might still get compensation if you booked both flights as a single booking, and the delay was the airline’s fault.

How much cash can I claim in compensation?

The amount you can expect to receive as compensation will depend on the distance of your flight and a few more details.

Here’s a quick guide:

  • If you were delayed for 3 hours or more, and the flight distance is less than 1,500km, you can claim up to €250 in compensation;

  • If you were delayed for 3 hours or more, and the flight distance is between 1,500km and 3,500km, you can claim up to €400 in compensation;

  • If you were delayed for 3 hours or more, and the flight distance is more than 1,500km (and within the EU), you can claim up to €400 in compensation;

  • If you were delayed for 3 hours or more, and the flight distance is more than 3,500km (between an EU and non-EU airport), you can claim up to €600 in compensation.
